This paper briefly describes the organisational setting in which the implementation of the integrated Dutch governmental traffic and transport policy is effectuated. The implementation is concentrated in transport regions. These are administrative associations of several adjacent municipalities. The paper elaborates some specific projects in which the Dutch Ministry of Transport has supported several transport regions in integrating road safety into their programmes. The paper describes the methods that have been developed specifically for this purpose. Special attention is given to the development of a method to design a network of safe roads on a regional level. The main principle of this method is to get optimally differentiating road types regarding their function, the desired behaviour of their users, and their layout. The paper also describes initiatives taken in order to develop a manual relating road safety aspects to the existing formal town and country planning process. Finally, the paper focuses on a research project that has recently been developed by the Transport Research Centre (AVV) of the Ministry of Transport. This project considers the relationship between road safety and other traffic and transport aspects in a more fundamental way.
