This Atlas is in four parts, and contains maps of New Zealand showing the more important road safety factors. Part One - Rankings presents Regions and Territorial Authorities (TLAs) ranked according to their road safety performance. Part Two - Measures of size contains maps of various indicators which describe the size of Regions measured by population, road network, traffic volume and societal cost of crashes. Each indicator is displayed in three maps: a map of New Zealand showing individual Regions, and maps of the North Island and the South Island showing individual TLAs. Part Three - Risk contains maps of road safety risk by Region and TLA. Risk is classified by causal factor, such as alcohol, speed, pedestrian involvement, cyclist involvement, driver factor etc. Maps have the same format as in Part Two. Part Four - Data tables consists of tabular data of all the road safety indicators to be found in the maps. The information in the Atlas is compiled from the Land Transport Safety Authority's database of road crashes, from Transit New Zealand's database of the road network and from the 1991 Census.
