Samenvatting

The aim of this paper is to compare and analyse the road safety and traffic behaviour of road users in the Baltic and Nordic countries (excluding Iceland). The large differences in traffic safety have decreased following the re-establishing of the independence of the Baltic countries in the beginning of the 1990s. The paper compares data such as accident location, fatalities among different road users, age and gender in fatal accidents and collision types. Furthermore, statistics and legislation concerning drunken driving, speeding, use of safety belt and other equipment is compared. A brief presentation of road user attitudes towards different accident prevention measures is also presented.
