The aim of the study presented in this paper is to compare the road safety situation in Finland and Estonia. The countries are close to each other in more than one way. However, the political and economical development has been different following the World War II. Estonia may become a member of the EU within a few years and, among other problems to be solved, has to harmonise its road safety standard with the member states. In this paper several characteristics such as casualties by road user group, fatalities by age group and by collision type, driving under the influence of alcohol, vehicle ownership, the use of passive safety equipment and speed behaviour is analysed. The paper also discusses the Estonian Road Safety Programme for 2000 - 2010.
