This report, one of a series of three, outlines a conceptual framework for research on road safety education of children to help structuring past research findings, stressing areas where research is needed and co-ordinating future research. Data are given on the participation of children in traffic: their behaviour (accidents and exposure), skill, knowledge, psychological abilities, influence of psychological and socioeconomic variables on children's performance. Mention is made of measures aimed at making the environment safer for children, teaching methods and materials in kindergartens and schools, training of teachers for road safety teaching, information to parents, and integrated police, teachers and parents training schemes.
