Samenvatting

The increasing trend of road accidents in developing countries like India causes concern. The role of road safety education in securing reduction of accidents in the long term needs better recognition. Road safety education is essential. Though it is desirable to have safety education spread over all the stages in life, training is best imparted in schools, as the pupils form a captive audience with a zeal to learn new skills. An integrated road safety education programme covering children between 3 and 16 years is suggested for inclusion in the school curriculum as an effective countermeasure against road accidents. (A)
