Samenvatting

This paper describes the approaches to road safety education developed in the Good Practice in Road Safety Education Project for recommendation nationally. Three areas were examined: a) the current state of road safety education in schools; b) the factors influencing safety on the roads and c) the relationship between road safety education and the curriculum. Road safety education was found to have a low status and to be focussed at the primary level. The way in which road safety could fit into the National Curriculum is represented diagramatically. It is suggested that road safety is placed in the wider context of safety education. The need for support from a wide range of agencies and individuals is stressed. Stages in introducing road safety education into the curriculum are suggested.
