Samenvatting

This paper reports some of the early findings of current research into road safety education (RSE) in UK schools. It follows previous national reviews in 1971 and 1989. Since 1989, there have been several major changes within schools; as a result, the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) commissioned another review to find out how these changes are affecting RSE. The DETR objectives here are to: (1) assess the current provision of RSE in UK schools and further education colleges; (2) compare the current provision of RSE with that in 1989; (3) assess what use is made of Good Practice Guidelines and other current materials, and reasons for not using them; (4) identify and disseminate examples of good practice; (5) identify areas needing improvement and, if appropriate, (6) recommend methods to improve the content and delivery of RSE in schools. The three phases of the RSE review are national surveys of road safety officers, schools, and colleges, interviews with a sample of respondents to find examples of good practice, and preparing research reports and guidance on good practice. The paper draws two main interim conclusions from this review of RSE, one year before its completion is due.
