Samenvatting

ARRB has recently completed a program of research on road safety engineering risk assessment. This research identifies the change in risk resulting from changes in road design standards and remedial treatments. This Austroads funded research will aid policy makers and practitioners in assessing risk and prioritising treatments so as to achieve optimal crash risk reduction for the available budget. Research topics include the development of crash reduction factors for different treatments, information on the level of risk associated with various road types and design features, crash costs for different movement types and in differing speed environments, in-depth investigations of rural head-on, intersection and run-off-road crashes, the safety implications of road asset deterioration, an investigation of crash risk migration, the effect of using multiple countermeasures, treatment life, treatment and maintenance costs, safety on unsealed roads, data collection for road safety, and information on the level of risk associated with various road types. As well as information on these specific topics, the research program delivered several other benefits, including the development of an Australian crash rates database and a better understanding of gaps in knowledge in road safety engineering. This paper provides examples of the results from some of this research. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. E217099.
