Samenvatting

To assist member authorities in the management of road assets to provide better safety outcomes, this research program has been developed to assess the safety implications of road deterioration, the safety benefits of asset restoration, and the potential for closer integration of asset management systems and road safety practice. This project forms part of a wider project of research on Road Safety Engineering Risk Assessment (RSERA). This document describes the research undertaken as part of this program on maintenance issues and safety. Three tasks were undertaken to address this issue: a review of literature to determine the safety implications of asset deterioration; a site assessment of maintenance issues that might influence safety; and a series of workshops to assess the integration of asset management and road safety. Objectives for and key findings from each of these stages are provided below. (Author/publisher)
