The Road Safety Handbook presents a summary of international research results concerning the effects of road accident countermeasures. A revised edition in Norwegian was published in 1989 and formed the basis for the Russian edition. It is based on a systematic review of road safety research in English, German, French and Scandinavian langages. The book discusses the following road safety aspects: 1. Road design and road furniture; 2. Traffic control; 3. Vehicle design and protective devices; 4. Vehicle inspection; 5. Requirements for driver, driver licence training and professional driving; 6. Police enforcement. All chapters have the same structure: problems and aim, description of safety measure, effect on accidents, effects on the environment. The book is published in Russian to help civil servants and politicians engaged in road safety in introducing effective road safety measures. Since Russian has been first foreign language in many Central and East European countries, it is hoped that the book will also be useful in these countries.
