Samenvatting

This report gives a summary of the road safety problems in developing countries, and especially an analysis of the prospects of road safety efforts in the countries in southern Africa and other developing countries. In general, the accident rate (the number of fatalities per vehicle) decreases when the vehicle density increases (the number of vehicles per inhabitant). In order to reduce the accident rate a systematic, but not very costly set of measures have to be taken. (A)
