Samenvatting

This paper describes a study of the factors influencing road safety based on statistics from the Hungarian National Road Database. Five types of data were investigated: a) road network hierachy and characteristics, b) traffic engineering information, c) pavement condition data, d) traffic characteristics and e) accident and injury data. The calculation of tolerable safety values is discussed. The results of an analysis of the national road network are briefly considered. The need for the data to develop a model to predict the effect of various road safety measures is outlined.
