Samenvatting

The subjects of this review are the characteristics of the road safety problem in Ireland and the development of road safety research, mainly in An Foras Forbartha. Firstly, the general characteristics of the problem are outlined, with particular reference to the categories of road accident which are most important in Ireland. Secondly, a methodology is described which has been developed to deal systematically with the problem. Thirdly, the application of this methodology and other research techniques in accident prevention are discussed. The main objective of the review is to provide a basic framework within which the problem of road safety in Ireland may be discussed, and a strategy developed for dealing with the problem in the future. The review concludes with a discussion of the application of countermeasures, with particular emphasis on the need for evaluation. (Author/publisher)
