Samenvatting

The principal objectives of this study were: (1) to identify the main characteristics of the road safety problem in Lesotho and try to determine the factors most responsible for the country's high accident rate; and (2) to identify measures that would strengthen present institutional organisation to carry out and coordinate road accident reduction activities more efficiently. The study also attempts to indicate and compare the strategies and approaches used in some of the developed and developing countries which are likely to be most succesful in alleviating road safety problems in Lesotho. The strategies that seem most applicable to Lesotho's situation are recommended for adoption. This paper concludes by road safety efforts in Lesotho, should be better coordinated with the aim of formulating effective road safety measures. The study further advises that adoption of countermeasure strategies should be pilot tested and evaluated to ensure that scarce resources are not wasted on ineffective measures.
