Samenvatting

While road safety action require a strong will and explicit policies at the national or central level, some types of measures or programmes are more relevant or easier to implement when applied at the local level. The present chapter aims at defining local safety action, identifying the actors in charge, showing the different forms such action can take according to where the initiative lies, and sketching the needs for coordination, information and training. A description of decentralised safety action in The Netherlands, and of national incentive programmes for cities in France, are provided as examples. (A)
