Samenvatting

Transport today is very different from that of ancient times, when travelling was done on foot. Numerous means of transport, and their associated infrastructure have been invented or further developed. The result is our present-day system of transport. When people or goods need to be conveyed, we can now choose from transport by road, rail, water and sometimes air. When people travel by the road and water modes, they can choose between individual and collective transport. In a few cases this also applies for travelling by air, but mostly it only involves collective transport. When someone uses individual transport by road, they can choose from walking, skateboarding, using a scooter, cycling, riding a motorized bicycle (motorbicycle and moped), riding a motorcycle and driving a car. When they use collective transport, the options by road are taking the bus, car pooling and company transport. The possibilities by rail are the tram and the train. Each of these modes of transport has its own specific requirements with respect to infrastructure, and is often particularly suited to a certain kind of journey. For freight transport, the available options by road are the truck, with or without trailer, and the van. In addition, a great deal of freight is transported by ship, train and sometimes by air. In some exceptional cases, transport by underground pipe is used (or is being considered). The following description of how the improvement of road safety is organized in the Netherlands will consider only the transport conducted by road.
