Samenvatting

This paper presents a brief overview of World Bank experience in road safety. One hundred and six projects have been undertaken by the World Bank with a direct or indirect impact on road safety. Of these, 36 included specific road safety components. In this paper, some of the key issues contributing to the success or failure of these components are explored. These are: infrastructure improvement; vehicle inspection; road user education; highway legislation; enforcement; post accident assistance; data collection and analysis; safety studies; safety audits; and provision of technical assistance to train local personnel, and to establish road safety, accident or enforcement units.
