Samenvatting
Safety initiatives in Hungary in the past 20 years are described. These include reducing the general speed limit in built up areas to 50 km/h, obligatory use of headlamps during the day in rural areas, more stringent law enforcement, and increased use of safety belts. The Interministerial Traffic Safety Committee was established in 1993 but its activities are restricted by lack of funds. Increased education of the public to improve road safety awareness is considered necessary.
