Road Safety Vision 2001 is a national effort aimed at making Canada’s roads the safest in the world. Implemented in 1996, Vision 2001 is supported by all levels of government, as well as by key private and public sector stakeholders. The initiative comprises a broad range of initiatives that focus on road users, road networks and vehicles. Specifically, it aims to: (i) raise public awareness of road safety issues; (ii) improve communication, co-operation and collaboration among road safety agencies; (iii) toughen enforcement measures; and (iv) improve national road safety data collection and quality. The adoption of Vision 2001 by the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) and the official endorsement of the initiative by all Ministers of Transportation and Highway Safety in 1996 were the latest in a series of evolutionary road safety initiatives that began more than 30 years ago. This update looks at successful road safety interventions in Canada and certain other countries in 2000. This report also introduces a successor plan - Road Safety Vision 2010 - which was approved by the Council of Ministers responsible for Transportation and Highway Safety in October 2000.
