The main results were: (1) There were 59,407 recorded road traffic accidents in New South Wales during 1990; (2) These accidents resulted in 32,950 casualties of which 797 were killed and 7,546 were admitted to hospital; (3) The number of persons killed was down by 163 (17%) on the previous year and was the lowest since 1957; (4) The number of persons injured was down by 3,171 (9%) on the previous year and was the lowest since 1968; (5) Passenger casualties were the lowest since 1962 and motorcyclist casualties were the lowest since 1968; and (6) alcohol was a contributing factor in at least 51% of fatal accidents on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, at least 25% of all fatal accidents, at least 17% of serious injury accidents and at least 7% of all accidents.
