Samenvatting

At the national and state level we have set challenging goals with respect to reducing death and injury on our roads. The question facing us is will we reach these goals without significantly changing our current focus towards road safety? This paper provides a broad level analysis of what is required to realistically achieve our targets, and challenges our current approach and funding levels. Nationally, Australia will need to direct more than $500 million of additional funding annually to targeted road safety programs to ensure we meet the national target of no more than 5.6 fatalities per 100,000 population by 2010. The need for local strategic plans to address local issues is highlighted, with the key elements of a plan discussed. The paper then provides details on better decision making to achieve safer roads. Recent developments and tools to help prioritise our resource allocation to safer roads at the network and project level are discussed.
