Although Australia is a large country with a small population. It is highly urbanised. Over 60 percent of its population is contained within five urban centres, two of which have populations close to 3 million and three of which have populations close to 1 million. A further 25 percent of the population is located in smaller urban areas. All of these urban areas have a relatively low density of development. Vehicle ownership is high, and is close to one motor vehicle for each two persons. The report discusses some aspects of transport policy and the planning of urban roads.
