The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials have created a goal to reduce the fatality rate from 1.5 to 1.0 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled by 2008. Many programs, people, and resources will be needed to help the Nation reach this goal. Roadway safety hardware management systems are a key part of the solution. This brief report points out the benefits of a roadway safety hardware management system, defines asset management, and looks at what several state DOTs are doing in the area of asset management. While the states have approached asset management differently, all aim to improve resource utilization, decision making processes, safety, and system reliability.
