In October 1998, ODS Ltd were commissioned by the Scottish Executive on behalf of the Scottish Road Safety Campaign (SRSC) to undertake a study which had as its main aim "to devise an effective strategy for establishing, maintaining and promoting road safety in the curriculum". The specific objectives of the study are: to assess the role which The Scottish Executive Education Department plays in encouraging inclusion of road safety education in School; to investigate the extent to which guidelines/requirements issued by Local Authority Education Departments influence the provision of road safety education at a more local level; identify the key factors in the Head Teacher's decision whether to include road safety education in schools; examine the potential role of the Scottish Qualifications Authority in providing a context for road safety education in schools through examination and syllabus requirements; identify the mechanisms by which road safety education can be improved and delivered more effectively and equitably in both primary and secondary schools.
