Forty university students participated in a study in which they were faced with the decision of whether to enter an automobile with an apparently intoxicated driver or not. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions: driver with one beer, intoxicated driver, intoxicated driver and confederate who enters the car, and intoxicated driver and confederate who refuses to enter the car. Students' decisions whether to enter the car, and their concern about the driver's drinking were assessed. Results revealed that participants consistently chose to enter the car in all conditions except when the confederate refused. Condition had no effect on participants' reported concern. (A)
