The author considers that a case exists for developing a comprehensive suite of measures under the heading of sustainable mobility management, which could include behavioural change programmes, such as TravelSmart; improved public transport facilities and services; land development policies and plans to support more walking, cycling and public transport; reallocation of street space to provide priority for buses or trams and to provide more convenient safer routes for pedestrians and cyclists; parking management policies and plans; pricing and charging mechanisms; and freight logistics and selected rail and road upgrades along major freight movement corridors. A number of programmes and results of case studies are discussed in the paper. Evidence is provided that demonstrates that TravelSmart (behaviour change programmes), parking policy and management and street space management are three programmes that have potential to influence travel demand to increase walking, cycling and public transport and limit excessive use of cars.
