Geographic databases will serve a wide variety of conventional and revolutionary roles in Vehicle Infrastructure Integration/Cooperation (VII/VIC) applications now being developed, tested, and implemented. These databasesmust contain both quasi-static information (such as precise road geometries), as well as dynamic information (such as real-time traffic/road conditions and vehicle positions). Due to their dynamic, real-time characteristics, such geographic databases are referred to as "Real-Time Maps" or "RTMs". This paper discusses the projected roles of RTMs in VII/VIC applications both within vehicles and within the infrastructures, as well as the roles of VII/VIC systems in enhancing RTMs. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653.
