The University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute's Center for National Truck statistics has the Trucks Involved in Fatal Accidents (TIFA) file for use by researchers. It is available on the Bureau of Transportation and Statistics' Intermodal Transportation Data Base http://www.itdb.bts.gov. It refines and expands on data in the NHTSA's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). Some 5,500 accidents are analyzed each year. The center is also studying elements of truck design such as mirrors and rollover warning systems, as well as collecting data on fatal bus accidents and accidents involving hazardous materials.
