Samenvatting

An element of the ROad MANagement System for Europe (ROMANSE) project in the United Kingdom was the development of multi-modal public access information terminals. These terminals provide information to assist the public in planning trips in and around the Southampton area and also for journeys between Southampton and places further afield. The terminals had to cater for a number of different modes of travel and to allow for interchanges between these modes and needed to cater for travellers using public transport services and private vehicles. The end-product, called TRIPlanner, caters for all of these aspects within an integrated package which can also be separated into individual elements if required. The structure of the system is such that the software can be used in other areas throughout Europe with the creation of the appropriate databases. This paper describes the recent developments of the TRIPlanner terminals, including changes to the system architecture, enhancements to the user interface, links between on-street kiosks and the ROMANSE Traffic and Traveller Information Centre (TTIC), to provide real-time travel information and the development of the tourist information provided.
