Samenvatting

Based on a number of international studies, pedestrian behaviour at light controlled crossings and red light negligence are presented. Factors which are related to red light negligence by pedestrians are studied. These are properties of the layout of the crossings, the traffic signals and the traffic. In addition to external characteristics of the pedestrian, other pedestrian behaviours, individual or in groups, as well as other motives which play a role in the red light negligence, are studied. From the results obtained it is concluded that it is advisable to vary in further research independent variables or (1) the time of the red light phase for pedestrian traffic, (2) the length of the pedestrian crossing expressed in traffic lanes, and (3) the traffic intensity.
