This article gives an overview of road development projects in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, with particular reference to the use of public/private partnerships. Economic growth and inward investment in the region are increasing and economic interdependency is growing, creating a need for a regional highway network. The Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) commits member states to supporting, financing and forming joint transport infrastructure projects. Some countries are introducing toll collection systems on their national and cross-border roads. Other road building projects include city ring roads to reduce urban congestion and to link residential and industrial areas and inter-urban expressways.
