Samenvatting

This report describes a study tour of some roundabouts in Continental Europe where there are cycle facilities or where the roundabouts were designed with cyclists in mind. The research was undertaken on behalf of the Driver Information and Traffic Management Division of the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions. Generally, the geometry of roundabouts on the Continent is 'tighter' than in Great Britain so that drivers cannot enter and leave at such high speeds. This leads to reductions in cycle accident numbers but may also reduce the traffic capacity of the roundabout. The descriptions and photographs of these schemes are intended to provide some pointers for developments in Britain and recommendations for further research are included. (A)
