Conventional route guidance is based on the travel time or the shortest path of travel distance. This paper presents a new idea to find the shortest path based on the minimum accident risk. An accident risk estimation model was developed and applied to assess the accident risk of the links in anetwork. The minimum risk path was selected using the shortest path searching method. A comparative analysis to compare the shortest distance path and the minimal accident risk path resulted in a significant difference ofthe route choice when using the data of Taipei City. Therefore, includingthe lowest accident risk route for traffic assignments and for route navigation systems will be meaningful.
