A home interview has been conducted among 1661 motorists to investigate how they prepare themsleves for a trip in terms of route choice. Quota sampling was applied with respect to four input variables:(a) sex; (b) age; (c) economic stratum; (d) city of residence. The interview dealt with rout preparation for a recent trip as well as a hypothetical trip of which the destination was defined by the interviewer. The results of the investigation have implications for modelling the processes or route preparation, route choice and route guidance, as well as for more everyday practical matters.
