Spatial information systems can play an important role with planning and policymaking at the local level. A recent survey shows that computer usage for spatial planning activities is in its infancy. There is hence an urgent need to research the theoretical and practical implications of a spatial information system for the organization and execution of actual planning activities; the organizational framework and the positions of the affected professionals.
