Samenvatting

A significant number of fatal crashes occur on rural two-lane roads. Many rural-road crashes are caused by vehicles crossing over the centerline and hitting oncoming traffic. Rumble strips, commonly used along the sides of highways to prevent drivers from drifting off the road, can also be placed along centerlines of rural, undivided two- lane roads to keep drivers from head-on collisions and opposing- direction sideswipes. Research shows that centerline rumble strips can reduce these types of accidents by 20 percent.
