The Road Accident Research Unit (RARU) at Adelaide University has investigated 236 crashes to which an ambulance was called in rural areas. This paper reports on the design and conduct of the study, which was sponsored by Transport SA. The main findings relating to the causation and consequences of the crashes are presented and illustrated with reference to specific cases.
