Samenvatting

Rural travel is characterised by a high proportion of long distances, relatively low traffic volumes, travellers unfamiliar with surroundings, and rugged terrain in remote areas. Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) have the ability to meet the needs of travellers as well as the needs of agencies responsible for the operation and maintenance of transportation systems. To assist in these endeavours, the Queensland Department of Main Roads developed an ITS Implementation Plan. As part of the Plan, the Peninsula District, located in Cairns commissioned a study Peninsula District: ITS Implementation Plan. The study was initiated to identify the opportunities and challenges of planning and deploying ITS in the Peninsula District. This paper provides a summary of the major findings of this study and also provides an overview of other ITS applications that have been implemented in other rural centres in Queensland.
