This report presents a short summary of rural road crashes in South Australia, particularly noting the difference between rural and metropolitan Adelaide crashes. In most cases, casualty crash statistics recorded at Traffic Research & Intelligence Section, for the years 1995/96 to 1997/98 are used. In some instances, only fatality statistics contain the detail required, and in one case Transport SA statistics from 1994 (latest published) are used. A common technique used in this report, is to present figures as a percentage of rural or metropolitan crash statistics. For example, `Crash Type' shows that 7% of rural casualty crashes were `rear end' crashes and 34% of metropolitan casualty crashes were `rear end' etc. This allows us to determine if `rear end' crashes (etc) are relatively more of a problem in rural areas than the metropolitan area. Casualty crashes are those crashes where one or more persons are treated by a doctor, admitted to hospital or killed. Serious casualty crashes are those where one or more persons are admitted to hospital or killed. (A)
