Samenvatting

In this book, rural transport policy is considered from a number of different perspectives: rural residents, urban dwellers, visitors, local authorities, internet groups and national government. Following the introductory chapter in which there is an overview of recent rural transport issues and typology of rural areas in the UK, there are 14 further chapters. These cover: rural travel patterns and behaviour; mobility and accessibility; traffic forecasts; transport and rural development; environmental issues: attitudes to rural transport issues; policy statements; the effects of national policies on rural areas; tools for rural transport; examples of change: demand management and transport packages; strategies for rural transport; a blueprint for rural transport; and conclusions highlight the need not to isolate rural transport issues, the importance of accessibility and the need for intermodal thinking.
