Personal safety and the protection of property are issues regarded to be of highest importance to individuals and communities. Government organisations have a responsibility to the public to provide and maintain infrastructure that is safe to all potential users. Car parks are one particular infrastructure where personal safety and property can be at risk. This paper discusses the development and application of the ARRB SAFE assessment methodology which focuses on how to change the physical environment of car parks to improve the perception of safety, for example improve lighting, remove blind spots and soften physical features. The paper discusses the application of the methodology to the City of Subiaco in Perth, Western Australia. Typical findings from the SAFE assessment are also outlined.
