Samenvatting

The Iowa Safety Management System (SMS) facilitated the Safe Mobility Decisions for Older Drivers Forum in 2002 to: raise public awareness, identify key safety improvement strategies, develop resources that help older drivers make safer mobility decisions, and provide opportunities for Iowa's senior citizens to share their concerns and suggestions regarding safe mobility with Iowa policy makers and service providers. Nearly 200 Iowans, half of them senior citizens, gathered to address safe mobility decisions for older Iowans. Participants learned about aging, driving, and roadway design; Iowa's aging population; crash statistics; and senior resources related to safe mobility. This packet contains the forum agenda, a list of exhibits, an executive summary of the forum, and the following 3 reports: Data Executive Summary - The Graying of Iowa and the Nation: What the Data Tells Us, by R. Thompson, M. Pawlovich, and K. Triggs; Resources for Wise Choices: Strategies for Older Drivers and Those Who Care About Them - Draft for Comments from Forum Attendees, developed by friends and members of the Iowa Highway Safety Management System; and Iowa Safe Mobility Decisions for Older Drivers Forum Report: A Public Discussion of Sciences, Services, and Systems for Senior Mobility, Focused on Driving. The forum report summarizes the forum and is derived from workshop discussions and the presenters' and participants' thoughts and ideas. The following presentations have been made: # What the data tells us (Bob Thompson, Iowa GTSB) # The Nations Aging Drivers (Charles Butler, AAA) # On the Road with Licensing (Colonel Garrison, Iowa State Patrol) # Improving Mobility for Florida Seniors (Dave Anderson, Florida DOT) # Predictors of Unsafe Driving (Dr. Matthew Rizzo, Univ. of Iowa) # Dementia and Driving (Geri Hall, ARNP/FAAN) # NHTSA and Older Drivers (Jim Green, NHTSA) # Medications and Dietary Supplements (Mary Beth Gross, FASCP) # The Road Ahead (Rudy Umbs, FHWA) # Engineering Older Driver Safety Improvements in Iowa (Tom Welch, Iowa DOT). Also included: Toolbox Of Highway Safety Strategies. The purpose of this toolbox is to assist Iowa's highway safety professionals, policy makers, and citizens in implementing ways to reduce death, injury, and economic loss on Iowa roadways. The 28-chapter toolbox is a comprehensive compilation of national and Iowa highway crash data, issue descriptions, and potential safety improvement strategies. The document provides a wide range of strategies to identify, implement, and evaluate opportunities for highway safety improvement. Some chapters address engineering topics such as intersections, cross-median crashes, and work zone safety. Other chapters confront driver-focused concerns such as impaired drivers, aggressive drivers, and the age-related challenges of younger drivers and older drivers. Data analysis, program planning, evaluation, and local safety teams are also addressed as "tools" to use in reducing deaths and injuries on Iowa's roadways.
