This document is designed for traffic safety planners and other interested parties to become aware of a program that has been shown effective in reducing child pedestrian accidents. The objectives of this document are: 1) to present the most recent statistics regarding the size of the pedestrian accident problem in the United States focusing on the involvement of children; 2) to present information on the Safe Street Crossing Program approach that employs a set of countermeasures that have been used and have been shown to be effective in reducing child pedestrian accidents; and 3) to focus on providing pedestrian skills to children age 4-15 years.
