Expectations concerning the growth in traffic participation by the elderly and the magnitude of their road safety problem, as it appears today are reviewed briefly. The emphasis of the paper will be on basic principles and practical measures which may be gainfully employed in order to improve the safety situation of the elderly in urban traffic. The rationale for these recommendations has its basis in the specific psycho- physical and psycho- social changes, which are the results of normal ageing and which ought to be accommodated in standards and regulations.
