Samenvatting

The book contains a comprehensive international review ranging from safety to economics. It draws on best practice in Europe, North America and Australia for the identification of hazardous sites and the development of effective countermeasures. The need for a good database of accidents as a foundation of an accident investigation and prevention programme is emphasised. Key elements of the database are outlined and methods of statistical analysis and the essential features of human behaviour influencing road and traffic designs are discussed. A wide range of countermeasures and their likely effectiveness are considered. These include road design, intersections and junctions, delineation, lighting and signing, road construction and maintenance. The treatment of hazards, traffic management and the needs of vulnerable road users are also reviewed. The safety audit process is examined in detail and the economic appraisal of road safety projects is also considered.
