Samenvatting

A number of the newer approaches to road safety planning in Europe consider the environmental as well as the safety consequences of road safety initiatives. Great Britain's road safety strategy seeks to promote alternatives to car-based transport and the benefits of reduced speeds are outlined not only in terms of road trauma savings but also in terms of reduced fuel consumption, emissions and noise. Sustainable Safety, the road safety strategy of The Netherlands, is modelled on the environmental concept of sustainability. Vision Zero gives safety and "other health-related environmental effects" equal billing as priorities to be achieved. This paper examines the interfaces between safety and the environment in these road safety strategies and the outcomes that this is producing. It also discusses the potential benefits of adopting such an approach in Australia. (Author/publisher) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. E205861.
