Samenvatting

The content of this thesis is safety and mobility of children crossing streets as pedestrians and bicyclists. The risk of fatal injury is higher for pedestrians and bicyclists, especially for children and elderly, than for other road users except motorcyclists. The effect of speed reducing devices installed to increase the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists at marked pedestrian crosswalks are studied and evaluated in before-and-after studies. Design principles of a safe environment for children as pedestrians and bicyclists are suggested based on research in this thesis and on earlier research results. Most important is that actual motor vehicle speeds are no more than 30 km/h, wherever children (regularly) cross streets. (Author/publisher)
