Samenvatting

`Prevention is better than cure' is an accepted principle, yet it is only in recent years that the concept of checking the design of new and improved roads for primary safety has emerged. The principle of safety audit as used by many highway authorities is that the engineers involved in accident investigation and prevention use their accumulated knowledge of common safety issues to ensure that mistakes are not repeated in future layouts. This work has now been expanded into the broader concept of safety engineering, where all highway and traffic projects are subjected to a process of continuous safety monitoring to ensure that the infrastructure we provide for our road user customers is less prone to potential accident problems.
