Samenvatting

Hazard management of the risks of human injury and death related to the automobile were described and exemplified by a Swedish car manufacturer. Two main hazards were in focus viz. traffic accidents and air pollution. The following factors were judged important to high quality societal and company accident hazard management; 1) Public concern about safety issues in Sweden, 2) a technological tradition and readiness in manufacturing company for safety engineering, 3) US Federal Register routines of proposed safety standards, 4) US recall system, 5) the Swedish annual vehicle inspections and 6) US product liability laws. While the accident hazard management routines were found quite elaborate and efficient, the exhaust emission hazard management routines were found less elaborate.
